Surface ocean current variations in the North Pacific related to Arctic stratospheric ozone

چکیده

Abstract Using reanalysis datasets and a coupled general circulation model, the relationship between springtime Arctic total column ozone (TCO) surface (5 m) ocean currents in North Pacific is investigated. We found that as March TCO decreases, statistically significant northwestward current anomaly occurs northern layer, but an anomalous southward appears central April, vice versa. The decreased favors enhanced stratospheric circulation, which tends to induce tropospheric positive Oscillation with easterly anomalies over midlatitude eastern Asia late through stratosphere-troposphere dynamical coupling. further extends eastward induces Pacific, negative (–NPO)-like via zonal wind shear interactions synoptic scale eddies mean flow early-middle April. –NPO forces northwestward/southward northern/central direct friction of Coriolis force. Our numerical simulations high- low-ozone scenarios also support affects by NPO anomalies. Moreover, ozone-related contribute Victoria mode-like sea temperature horizontal heat advection. These results imply signal could be predictor for variations currents.

The surface impacts of Arctic stratospheric ozone anomalies

In the Arctic stratosphere, total column ozone in the spring can vary, from year to year, by as much as 30%. This large interannual variability, however, is absent from many presentgeneration climate models, in which the prescribed seasonal cycle of stratospheric ozone includes, at best, smooth multi-decadal trends. We here investigate the extent to which interannual variability in Arctic strat...

Daily surface wind variations over the equatorial Pacific Ocean

Daily surface wind variations over the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean during summer 1992 are documented, using hourly observations from the tropical atmosphere ocean moored buoy array. Diurnal and semidiurnal variations are apparent in the zonal wind component, with peak-to-peak amplitudes of a few tenths of a meter per second. The phase of the semidiurnal cycle in zonal wind is approximately...

Ocean acidification of the North Pacific Ocean

The addition of fossil fuel carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is rapidly changing seawater chemistry and the calcium carbonate saturation state of the world’s oceans as a result of the acidifying effects of CO2 on seawater. This acidification makes it more difficult for many marine organisms (e.g., corals, plankton, calcareous algae, and mollusks) to build skeletons, tests, and shells of calcium...

Organophosphate Ester Flame Retardants and Plasticizers in Ocean Sediments from the North Pacific to the Arctic Ocean.

The presence of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and plasticizers in surface sediment from the North Pacific to Arctic Ocean was observed for the first time during the fourth National Arctic Research Expedition of China in the summer of 2010. The samples were analyzed for three halogenated OPEs [tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tris...
